About the Initiative

The Intersections Initiative is a year-long partnership between America Walks, the League of American Bicyclists, and the Safe Routes Partnership supported in part by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These efforts are part of Active People, Healthy NationSM, a national initiative led by the CDC, to help 27 million Americans become more physically active by 2027. We help build capacity to apply for infrastructure funding to support active and public transportation projects and identify the policies and practices that make this a reality.

Projects that get Funded

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides significant funding for active and public transportation projects that help Americans get to where they’re going. This funding is available to communities of all sizes to support a wide variety of street features. This community design makes walking and bicycling more appealing while making streets more safe and accessible.

Here are just a few examples of the types of projects there is funding for. Connect with us to share what you’re interested in for your community and we can help you identify the appropriate funding sources.

Safer Streets

Safer streets for everyone should always be the primary goal, but too frequently the design of our streets puts vehicles and speed first. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law offers funding for road safety assessments, small-scale traffic calming, converting highways to safe streets, and more.

Pedestrian Infrastructure

Sidewalks and crosswalks are the building blocks that connect destinations for people on foot and using mobility devices. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides funding to build pedestrian infrastructure, including important components like lighting, disability accessibility, and tree planting.

Bike Lane Networks

Protected and connected bike lanes are vital for safe and effective travel by people on bikes. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funds projects for safe bike lane planning and construction, as well as bike parking, and bike shares.

You have the power to shape the communities of the future.
