Get Started

Engaged community leaders, organizations, and local governments understand what communities need to be safer, more accessible, and healthier. But so many don’t know how to make their vision a reality. The Intersections Initiative can help. We bring active transportation projects to life by helping navigate federal funding opportunities and building community demand. Get in touch now to find out how to get started.

How You Can Get Started

Tell us whether you are a community leader/organization or are representing a local government agency to find out more.

1.

Find your people: is there a local bicycle or pedestrian advocacy group? Are there groups representing people with disabilities? Connect with others interested in active and public transportation to show that there is interest/demand from community members in walking and wheeling.

2.

Connect with formal decision-makers: ask what their plan is for investing in walking, biking, or other forms of active transportation in your community. If you’re met with roadblocks, share with them why walking, biking, and active transit matter for public health, climate, household finances, and local economies.

If your local government seems open to investing in active transportation, ask what projects that improve walking, biking, access to transit, or other forms of active transportation have been identified.

3.

Connect ideas to funding: highlight that there is significant new funding available for these types of projects. If you need help figuring out the specifics of funding opportunities or deadlines to share with your local government, reach out to us — we can help you navigate that!

1.

Engage: listen to your constituents’ needs and interests related to safe, active, connected transportation. Connect with local community groups and members to understand what their priorities are – listen to what’s really needed to help your residents get to the places they need and want to go.

2.

Assess: what plans are on the books? What projects have been identified? If none, work with agencies and constituents to gather this information. Take a walk with residents, dig into data on traffic crashes in your community, and look at streets where cars speed – these are all great starting points for determining where safety and connectivity investments are needed.

3.

Act: pursue funding to develop plans to improve safe, active transportation and/or build street features and community design that makes it easier and safer for your residents to get around on foot, on bike, and on transit. Need help navigating these opportunities? We’re here to help!
